About Us

Purbanchal College, Silapathar which was formerly known as“Silapathar Commerce College” due to dual stream i.e., Arts and Commerce, has been changed to its present name “Purbanchal College, Silapathar” by order of the Govt. of Assam and Dibrugarh University as per norms. It is the only premier institution of higher education in both Arts and Commerce streams in the entire Jonai Legislative Assembly Costituency (114 ST Reserved). The college was established in the year 1996 in this vast, rural, and tribal; interstate border area between the state of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. The whole area is socio-economically backward. It is dwelt in by people of diverse castes, creeds, communities, tribal and ethnic groups who have their own distinct culture, religion and language. To provide higher education to the students who are mostly first generation readers and belong to socially deprived and downtrodden families of this area, the college was started at the initiative of a few educationists, the deprived parents, social workers and conscious public. Purbanchal College, Silapathar is situated at Jyotinagar of Silapathar Town about 1/2km away from the Silapathar-Lekabali main road. The location of the college is really a suitable and fascinating one. In the East of the college, there lies the national highway-15 leading to the hea quarter of Jonai Legislative Assembly Constituency. In the West side of the college there lies the Silapathar Likabali main road linking to Arunachal Pradesh along with the mythological Malinithan and Rukmini Mandir, which creates an attractive natural scenario. In the South is the rail road leading to Murkongselek the last railway station on the north-bank of the mighty river Brahmaputra. The environment of the college is calm, quite and healthy which is extremely suitable for academic activities.Since its inception, the college has been sincerely rendering service in imparting higher education at UG level and devotedly working for the all round development of students and doing community service as expected of a higher education institution. The college not only caters to the need of the local students but also the needs of the students of neighboring state of Arunachal Pradesh in great numbers. The active involvement of the college in disseminating knowledge and assiduous performance within its precinct, pleased Dibrugarh University to extend permanent affiliation in the year 12/09/2007 for the ongoing Arts and Commerce courses respectively. In the time to come, the college obtained UGC’s 2f in 14/08/2007 and 12B in07/08/2010. The college was provincialized under rovincialisation Act by Govt. of Assam w.e.f. 14th August, 2013. The college obtained development and other grants from UGC during different plan period under varied UGC schemes. In addition, the college also obtained aids from state Govt. and local bodies from time to time. The college has made all the effort to keep pace with new changes in education. Accordingly new courses have been introduced, more construction have been made, ICT introduced and various mechanisms evolved for implementation and governance. In spite of having majority of mediocre students, the college has made maximum effort to improve their academic stance and in this regard has become successful to a great extent, though a lot still remain to be done. The college has separate academic building, classrooms for different classes, departmental blocks, library with a good number of books, journals, periodicals, laboratory with all necessary equipments and apparatus, conference room, common rooms for both boys and girls with well equipped infrastructure facilities and auditorium cum indoor stadium and a big outdoor sports complex.
