Purbanchal College, formerly known as Silapathar Commerce College, was renamed by order of the Government of Assam and Dibrugarh University. Established in 1996, it is the only premier institution offering higher education in both Arts and Commerce in the Jonai Legislative Assembly Constituency (114 ST Reserved).
Located in the socio-economically backward interstate border area between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, the college serves a diverse population of castes, creeds, tribal, and ethnic groups — many of whom are first-generation students from socially deprived families.
Situated at Jyotinagar in Silapathar Town, just half a kilometre from the Silapathar–Lekabali main road, the campus environment is calm, quiet, and healthy, fostering academic growth.
The college received permanent affiliation from Dibrugarh University in 2007, followed by UGC recognition under sections 2(f) and 12B. Provincialised by the Government of Assam in 2013, it continues to evolve with new courses, ICT integration, and ongoing infrastructure development.

Purbanchal College was established with the primary
goal of developing a system for conscious, consistent, and catalytic improvement in the
overall performance of our institution.
IQAC works to channelise the efforts and measures of the institution towards academic excellence — ensuring quality enhancement through planned and structured academic and administrative processes. Our focus is on developing quality benchmarks in all aspects of institutional functioning: teaching, research, extension activities, and governance.
We are committed to promoting research culture, facilitating faculty development, and creating a student-centric learning environment.
